Why Aren't We Showing Up?

This is the most important question we are asking right now. We have some ideas — but we don't want assumptions. We want your truth.

The gap between the number of Black adults who could donate and those who do is significant, and closing it starts with understanding it. Some of the barriers we're already hearing about include:

Lack of Awareness

Many eligible Black donors simply haven't been reached by campaigns that speak to them directly or feel relevant to their lives.

Fear & Uncertainty

Concerns about needles, pain, side effects, or not knowing what to expect can stop people before they even look into donating.

Donation centres may feel too far away, or appointment slots too hard to get around work, childcare, and daily life.

My Blood Isn't Special

Many Black donors don't know how uniquely valuable their blood is for patients with sickle cell disease and other conditions.

Historical and present-day inequalities in healthcare have created real, understandable hesitancy in our community.
